That sucks.. heard about this yesterday. :|.
 
ya that sucks really bad. i would have been amazed if he survived that.
 
Ya I saw that in about 35565 other places in the tubes.

What's unfortunate is that luck was definitely FAR from him on that day.

If he had kept sliding inside the track (as with most FUBARs in the sport), he would most likely have gotten away with minor scratches, or broken bones at most.

Instead, he:
1 - flew outside the track.
2 - Hit a pole more or less at full speed (minor reductions for impact and sliding)
3 - Hit the pole with his neck/head.

Well... what can I say - when life says FUCK YOU to you... you die.
 
olympics committee or the Olympic crew that designed it messed up. Apparently the canadians questioned its safety but the trainings still went on.
 
Well, I guess in general it's not the best design where you have metal poles right next to the track, right after the most difficult/high-speed turn in the course... but then again on top of that he got quite unlucky.
 
there is a roof so you need columns to support it.
Yes the design is the problem.
