BF3 TV missle question

I just got all unlocks on the attack chopper. When I am the gunner I have the TV guided missile available but I cannot launch it unless the target is "lit" is that correct? Because sometimes I am in the chopper and I am getting killed by a missile when I am not getting the laser target acquisition warning. At least that is was it appears to be.

Can I launch the TV missile without my intended target being lit?

The target is guided from the gunner's position. The target does not have to be lit. Many gunners will launch the missile and curve it into the target heli, usually from underneath so you don't see it coming.
 
Ok, how can I launch the missile? It won't launch unless a target is lit for me for some reason. Unless I am missing something. I'm sure that's the case.
 
If you are in the gunner's position, hit 2 to change to missile from gun. Missile fires and steers with the mouse.
 
Sounds like he is using a laser guided missile instead of TV missiles
