At least I think the SSs are anti-aliased which I hope isn't just because they're some kind of custom cinematic renders...

The jets are the commanders call just like orbital strikes I am pretty sure. If you watch the videos it shows them with the commander spotting out the people and calling it in.

Yeah I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere that you have to call in a strike in order for them to come. They are not pilot-able.
