Ten US Military Aircraft That Never Quite Made It

i think i love you zappy... the 23 had better stealth and around the same manoeverability as the 22 even without thrust vectoring...it just cost a bit more i think.

YF23 lost to the YF and now the F-35. The cost is - http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/gene...=aerospacedaily&id=news/asd/2010/06/03/01.xml

When I was stationed at Edwards all these X and Y planes were flying around. Word around the campfire via contractors, etc, was that the 23 (Northrup/General Electric) was the better aircraft, but since Northrup/GE just got the contract, relatively speaking, for the B-2 at 2 billion a copy, they awarded the contract for the 22 (Lockheed/Pratt and Whitney).
As far as the 35, I can't believe the USAF or DOD is going back to a single engine aircraft. Oh well!

used to fly with a two year tour 71 driver----during VN he flew numerous missions over "hostile" airspace --for THE COMPANY-I asked him about threats----he laughed and said there were none----just firewall it----hold on and watch the skin temps----NOTHING could catch it----what a machine !!!

Reason the 32 wasn't pick was for several reasons. The 32 needed to have parts removed to do the vertical take off and the 35 didnt'. The 23 couldn't do the air refueling the first try and 35 did. The manufacture of the 32 was going back the drawing board and was going propose a different design as their proposal to the military team and the 35 was ready to go as is so the 32 lost.

Notice the forward nose in this video. It's removed for the vertical tests because they couldn't do it with it on.

And 36 didn't need any changes.

squirreli love the YF23 not boeings POS 32 the 32 was just a harrier with a better engine and airframe, nothing new in it, the 35 can actually hover for more than like 30seconds, because it does not have to liquid cool the engine like the 32.

The YF23 is what competed with the YF22 which is now the f-22
