Democrats in the US Senate are seeking to limit the amount of caffeine in energy drinks, saying the companies misrepresent their products. Essentially they are saying energy drinks should be considered soft drinks because they come in similar packaging, and thus should be subject to the same caffeine limitations as soft drinks. Apparently these Senators think people who buy Red Bull, NOS and Monster are completely unaware they are buying energy drinks. The arrogance and ignorance of the nanny state never ceases to amaze me. This is the kind of logic that brought us the scary looking guns ban of the 90's. As usual all the condescending legislation will impact the urban areas the most, which is only appropriate since they are the ones who elect these twats.

What happened to a government for the people by the people? Oh, I forgot, it's by the idiots for the idiots...my bad.

Yeah cause redbull comes in a can that resembles a soda? Don't think so. Can of NoS? Should your really be drinking Nitrous Oxide... bet you read what it was first rather than have a can blow gas down your throat :p I can legally buy as much caffeine as I want and consume it and die. First a union kills twinkies and now the government wants to kill energy drinks by classifying them as something that can't be energy drinks. I wan't to be fat with a weak heart damn it!

Some old guy unknowingly drank a red bull and actually had the energy to have sex with his wife and now he is upset he has to do it again. What kind of package do you want it in? Super-concentrate in a needle?

LMAO!

I get about 4-5 hours of sleep on work nights and I drink 1 0 cal, 0 carb, Rockstar 4 mornings of the week. My commute to work is 45 miles and coffee just doesn't wake me up like a rockstar does. I should have the right to drink whatever I want and "I" should make the decisions on what is good for me and what is not.

Well fortunately Redneck, the government is here to protect you.....from you. This is just the beginning, regulations like this are going to start pouring in now that there is officially no accountability in Washington.

Well there is a flipside to protecting yourself from yourself. Reduced healthcare costs and since you bastards wont let me get healthcare I can afford :p Until I die every time I end up in the hospital its costing someone money. I havent been to a doctor in 6 years since the last time I had health care from work and I had not been to one before that since 2003. But I am sure when I am older that will change pretty rapidly. Id hope to be on my feet by then. But I qualify for all sorts of government assistance that I haven't taken. Only thing Id like to see in my lifetime is some coverage whether its affordable or I make enough money to have it. I can deal with the fact I am mentally incapable of functioning with normal people and therefor struggle with work. But health is scary!

This is why I don't take political side. On one side we don't want to foot the bill for people causing them selves medical issues which cost the collective population money on the other side we don't want to face the problems that come with government sponsored health care. In the end no matter what decision is made we all end up paying the same amount of money in different forms. You might be able to shift it onto a different group for a little. Whats the point in arguing over which way to go.

No body really cares about your health. They care about the cost of your health. Both parties have a different approach to not paying for it. They are both/all wrong :p I might come off as talking about people without health care but this goes for people with. When you are down or dead it affects communities and companies negatively. It equates to cost somewhere.

They think they can trick legislation into existence as yet another way to keep people healthier. Problem is when you think everyone is dumber than you, you look like the dumbass.

Nobody will be able to afford healthcare without a strong economy and when doctors stop accepting Medicare. Get a job driving a commercial vehicle Rain, your company will be legally obligated to have your health screened by a doctor every two years.

Yup I remember getting pulled over driving a box truck thats gvw was 11,000 you dont need a cdl but you apparently have to get a physical.

thats nothing!!!!! mr conservative William Edward "Bill" Haslam of TN signed the saggy pants law. if i wanna show my ass to show im available i sure as hell have a right!!! both parties suck i hate this one sided bullshit this is why this nation is so divided everyone lives to tear the other down....

GT I would rather they left us the fuck alone and just did the bare minimum. Huge difference between a state/city making a law than the federal government.

laws passed anywhere is a law, except the sate is only affected by that gov. which sucks for that state, with society the way it is and how people think, not parties, it will continue liberal or conservative thats my point, its the people in charge that can do anything the they see fit as i say both parties suck why? because there will always be that person fucking shit up regardless pf party

this shouldn't be a 2 party system, it should be be a single whos gonna do some shit to us next party... i agree with you on the issue that they should leave it at a minimum but both parties have their fuck ups in their days not just liberals

Read an article today on the energy drink shit; coffee 100+ mg of caf; red bull 200+ mg; starbucks 300+ mg; so does starbucks have to label their shit also? Fucking big bro knows whats best for us.

I pay $365 bucks a month for health insurance for me and my family. The first doctor visit of the year costs me $250 bucks!!! Fucking seriously! I'm still behind in doctor bills and still paying $360 for coverage. I'm thinking about moving to Canada. Sick of this country.

Uhm... you guys might not believe it, but Monster and Red bull are the 2 main refreshment drinks in my educational institution... (4000+ students), there is a separate large fridge just for red bull in our cafe, like everyone drink either those 2 or are vegans who drink diet water.

It is a sick curse on people, they buy it because the packaging looks "cool" and then drink it because it makes them look "cool", this year however, some are coming to their senses after being fucked up by the drinks physically.

I'd definitely not support this act, but i'd support an act on a higher age requirement or a doctor's approval for energy drinks or sth... It is just pure BS when people say that people dont drink them, people do drink them and they drink them more than water , here at least.

Then your schools students are dumb :p Red Bull cans look generic as shit. Nothing cool about it until the alcohol comes out.

Monster can design on the other hand makes a kick ass looking A/C Moisture trap:

People drink red bull here because it's an energy drink not because they are thirsty. Seriously, who the fuck could quench their thirst with red bull? Stuff tastes like ass and is tart as hell, plus it's a diahretic. But hey, NY banned the sales of soft drinks larger than 16oz, again though that is on the state/municipal level.

werent they thinking about denying McDonalds to obese people? lol

That was on the city level and is absurd. With that said, you might want to change the title of your thread. See, if you believe in democracy as a form of government then you believe in liberalism. There are varying degrees, but a democracy is a liberal form of government -- where the rights and liberties of the individual are free to be expressed. The trick is and always has been balancing the the liberty of one individual with the liberty of others. That said, what might come out of this is the FDA looking into it more; 18 deaths in a year will spur someone to look at it. Just because two senators say something does not mean it will come to pass. Where was this righteous indignation when a much larger group in congress signed a letter earlier this year that went all McCarthy but this time talking about how the State Department and other areas of our government were being overrun with muslims? Read what the House and Senate do on a daily basis, especially the House, and you will see a lot of time given to things that go nowhere and do nothing.

With all that, this is part of a bigger regulatory issue that has been around for years. The FDA does not have jursdiction over any vitamin or herbal supplements which has led to scary things finding their way into people, usually things the manufacturer didn't share. Example: testosterone. You can get the very expensive description and be beholden to little things like medical research and drug labeling that keep people from killing themselves and causing massive hormonal imbalances in everyone that might come into contact with them or buy over the counter supplements that claim equal efficacy. They might contain testosterone or they might not. One way leads to massive medical issues the other leads to expensive urine. Just one example; supplements and drinks that are unregulated can make any claim they want and drop anything they want inside. Should they have to verify the claims of their ingredients and have to discuss the medical issues that might come of them? This is a large and ongoing issue, and energy drinks are just next up in that line. One official saying something does not make it happen, and they called for the FDA to look at not the caffeine but the possible interactions of caffeine and other stimulant ingredients.
