so i have a farily new graphics card, the gtx 560ti, not to worryed about updateing that since i got it about a month or two ago, but down the road i might sli or what ever get a second card. but any ways i got the hard drive, and the graphics card, and the ram.

so my ram that i got is PC3-10600 MB/sec DDR3 240 pin, and my graphics card is PCI-E. so right now all i need is a cpu, mother board, and new case. um i have a 500 or 600 wat psu in there at the moment. so i have a farily lose buget, max i want to spend all toghter is $800. Only one thing is i cant get the stuff shipped to me so i gota be able to locate it at local pc stores.

so with $800 what kind of mother board and cpu should i get, as for the case i have a nice $85 one lined up :) I dont know shit about computers i just know how to use them, as putting them toghter my step brother knows how to do all that shit, he just hasnt kept up with todays gaming gear, so thats why im hear asking you guys.
 
You get more bang for the buck with the I-5 and right now the performance increase from an i-5 to an I-7 is marginal. But to be able to get a quad core that can OC to 4.8-5.0 Ghz for $180.00-that's a great deal!

i7 is where it's at---HT, amazing overclocks, etc. If on a budget, i5 is nothing to scoff at, though. Looking at your build....whatever you do, make sure the ram you have is compatible with whatever motherboard you decide on. What I mean by that is, Asus is fairly picky on RAM, not sure about other brands (i've only used intel/msi/abit/asus). Not saying it won't work, but you may have to manually adjust timings, voltage, etc. to find the sweet spot. An $800 budget for a chip and mobo will get you pretty much anything excluding extreme editions. I'll say this: if you're getting a high-end chip, choose a motherboard that will take advantage of it, and vice-versa.

Especially if you're looking at gaming there's no damn difference except for the extra price you pay for the I7. That 2500k will out perform any I7 except the 980 or 990x

With the budget he wants to stay under I'd stick with the I 5 as the cpu, mb, ram, and case can all get under that cap easily. If you get an I7 then you can get the cpu, mb, ram and no case.

According to the article you linked, the 2600k destroys the 2500k in pretty much every benchmark.

From the article: " Now the Core i7 2600K at just over 300 USD is not exactly a mid-range price, it however is and will remain the fastest quad-core processor currently available on the market. I can recommend this processor very very much. When you opt to step down to the Core i5 2500 then you'll forfeit on hyper-threading, get 2MB less L3 cache and the core clock goes down 100 MHz. It will save you some money alright, but the performance decrease is very much noticeable and measurable. It's still a very fast quad-core processor for the money. But yeah, we can't help it, we've fallen in love with the Core i7 2600K very much. That processor seems to have all the variables right."
 
Gaming-we're talking gaming here on a budget and that I5 kicks ass nicely, especially for the price. Also, look at bc2 with frostbite engine-notice anything in that same article; no difference in fps-the game is gpu limited, not cpu and that will likely hold true for BF3 as well.

Edit:-If you call 10-12% difference destroying then you're right. But in the real world that's barely a noticeable difference.

I agree with you 100%, the i5 is THE chip to get on a gaming budget. GPU's have been the limiting factor as you said, it'd be nice if BF3 was mulit-core aware (let's say quad), where the hyper-threading and extra 2 mb of cache would shine. Again, nothing wrong at all with the i5 from a gaming standpoint :) I was thinking of more of an all-around machine.
 
Yeah, all around the I7 but for most people the I5 does quite nicely.

I really think he could get the !5 2500k, a nice MB, 8gb DDR3, a good case, and another 560 if he wants for the price he's looking at. Hell, Doaker, if you want I'm sure we can find the parts in that price range and then you'd have the 560 in sli and still have a kick ass machine!
 
You said you already have the ram, right? PC3-10600? If memory (ha!) serves, that's DDR3 @ 1333 mhz. I'd suggest getting 1600 mhz ram, 8 gb flavor as Six suggested. Do you plan on overclocking?

Edit: You can run your ram at 1333, just saying 1600 mhz would be ideal imo (especially if you plan on overclocking).

no wont be overclocking, not sure on how that works. that pcu and mother board are looking pretty good. i just got to see if my local store has it. so really going from a i5 to i7 is pointless? if i got a i7 would that keep me going longer then i5 so i dont have to upgrade down the road? as for sli, i wont be getting another card till around bf3 release.
 
You can get a motherboard that accepts both I7 and I5 cpus. Personally, I'd get the I5-and upgrade to an I7 later on and stick it in the same motherboard. But hell, if you're not doing sli until (maybe) bf3, you can get a nice case, mb, cpu, and ram for

Don't forget also that you can save money by getting the cpu at microcenter and getting a less expensive motherboard and You'd do better with d 2 x 4gb sticks of DDR3

the thing is tho, if i could get the i7 now, then whats the point of buying the i5, then updating to a i7 latter?
 
You could always do that-get the I7 now. I was just thinking if you wanted to get the best bang for your buck get the I5 and another 560 ti but it doesn't sound like you're interested in going that route.

yea because the computer store near me doesnt have it in stock at the moment, so thats why if i just get the mobo and the i7 cpu ill be set, then a few months down the road near bf3 release ill get a second gtk 560. but from the advise you guys have given me i think ill be getting this:
