Last rig I built was in the summer of 2009...so my shit is a little outdated by now to say the least. Finally gonna drop the cash and build a new one. Not going for a crazy intense gaming rig, just something solid. Not worried about overclocking and liquid cooling etc. Going for a sweet blue and black theme.

Been doing a lot of research and here's what I've come up with
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=30612047

Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 450D Black ATX Mid Tower Gaming Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139042
Just a classy as fuck case, looks great. Don't need anything bigger or gaudier.
($120 free shipping from amazon)

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 Haswell Quad-Core 3.3GHz LGA 1150 84W Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116991
Don't care about OC'ing so this one is perfect. Brand new, fast.

Mobo: MSI Z97S SLI Plus LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130775
Not too expensive, all the features I need, and the newest tech. Cheapest one with 8 SATA ports, as my hard drive collection is ever expanding.

GPU:
SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100364VXL Radeon R9 270X 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 CrossFireX Support OC WITH BOOST Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202059
Great bang for the buck, already bought a slightly used one on ebay for only $120. Cool and quiet. Don't need much more power.

RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345
Would love 16GB but prices are crazy and probablyyy not necessary

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650 G 80 PLUS GOLD Certified 650W Active PFC ATX12V v2.31/EPS 12V v2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Full Modular PSU 10 Year Warranty 120-G1-0650-XR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438026
Very solid. Bought for ~$80 from Amazon.

SSD:
Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148821
Cheap and fast, doesn't get any better.
Already have like 6TB of storage in other drives, so just need this for my boot drive, games, and programs. 512 is a good amount, any less and I'd be constrained.

OS: Windows 8.1 - you guys convinced me.

Would love some feedback. Pretty set on most of these things, but could be swayed through persuasive arguments I suppose. Have only bought the GPU so far so no going back on that one.

Edit: just heard of a thing called Startisback, anyone have any experience with it? seems like it could make windows 8 much better and maybe worth getting. Damn lack of a start button was a deal breaker

You can always add mroe RAM down the road, like I did. Never hurts to Overkill a PSU, helps so you dont have to buy one for a while.

Looks like a Solid build to me. Most of the things i can see to change come from opinions. I'm just not a Radeon fan.

Fair enough. The radeon right now is just a lot better than any equivalently priced Nvidia

I would suggest changing your SSD to 120s or 240s and just raid them if you want a solid state that big. You will get a stronger read write speed depending how you raid them. I use my larger TBs for storage and games. But I only use my SSD for the OS mainly and some primary games.

higher chance of failure with raid 0, minimal payoff for any real world performance increase and, typically, higher cost and more effort. I would recommend at current pricing to get a 500gb or higher ssd and a secondary drive for large storage.

I still don't understand why anybody is buying slow memory when the faster stuff costs the same to a little less...what gives? The only other thing I'd suggest is swapping that SSD to a Samsung EVO. And I know some Win7 enthusiasts hate it but Win 8.1 really does run games much better. If you're getting a gaming system put together, why not use the OS that lets it game better?

Agreed with the SSD. Just gonna stick with one larger drive, not worth the effort to RAID. Down the road I can buy another big one and then raid those together if I want. Have tons of secondary storage.

Six: Interesting point. Looked into it though and the same corsair vengeance stick is $93 for the 1866, so $13 more for a little speed boost. Is that actually worth it? Past experience would say no. I guess other modules are equivalent price though at the higher speed, but I like my blue Corsairs haha. Stubborn.
Also, I looked into it further and you're definitely right about switching to an EVO if I were getting the 256GB version of the MX110, which is shit, but from the benchmarks and reviews that I looked at the 500GB version is just as fast if not faster than the EVO, and cheaper too.

Ugh, still not sure about windows 8. When's that next update supposed to come with a real start button?

sort of leaning towards windows 8, as much as it pains me to say haha. The whole metro tile thing can burn in hell but I think with the start menu back, the new features and improvements make it worth it

Meh, I boot straight to desktop-there's ton's of articles how to do it; you change settings once and never need to do it again. It looks the same as Win 7 that way. Also, change the settings to bypass the login-the only thing that annoys the fuck out of me about 8.1 is it requires you to log on every damn time. But, change the settings, a 2 minute deal, and you don't have to do that ever.

I hear you on the Vengeance memory, but you can get 2400mhz Mushkin and G.Skill for $84.00 at that speed and the Vengeance is $102. And yeah, you will see a difference from 1600 to 2400mhz. The processor and MB you're getting take advantage of the memory like previous ones never did.

8.1 includes the start button anyway; clicking on it just takes you to the start screen. You can hit the start button on the keyboard and start typing to search without making any changes whatsoever. So if it's just the button you want, you don't need to make any changes at all.

I installed 8 this afternoon, and iobit Start Menu 8 a couple of minutes later.

It's perfect. It looks just like the start menu in 7, it's free, and you can customize it as much as the one in 7:

You can even change the icon for the windows 7 one, use one from their gallery, or create your own.

If that's not good enough, I've read that MS is planning to bring back the full menu in the next major update. (EA: watch and learn) There's really no reason to choose 7 any more.

I'm sold, Windows 8.1 it is.
Just switched my PSU to the 650W EVGA, saves me about 33 bucks, don't need all that power. Only difference besides 100 fewer watts is it has 4 rails instead of one, but oh well. Both GOLD, fully modular, all black sleeving, and lots of SATA connectors. All the reviews on newegg are literally from retards http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438026 ($80-$10MIR from amazon)

How bout this set? Gotta keep my blue look lol. seems olid

Now you're talking! I've got those same ones in my system and zero problems running them @2400mhz using the XMP settings in an Asus Z87MB

haha sweet.
Perhaps the last thing to be decided then is the CPU. The 4590 is solid, and can be bought for $170 from Microcenter. However, the 4670k can also be bought there for only $201, which is what I was willing to pay for the 4590 originally anyway. And I can have fun overclocking with that one, not that I care much about that but I figure if you're building your own computer it's a fun feature to have lol. BUT, the 4690k is coming out literally tomorrow, has a list of $240 on newegg but not sure if it will be available at microcenter and for what price. Probably not as discounted right away as the 4670k is.

If I do go with the 4670k, it will also likely mean that I have to get a real CPU cooler. Though would probably want a new one even with only the 4590. Thoughts? Or just who gives a fuck and pick one lol

Unless you plan on overclocking the stock one will work for a while and then you can upgrade. If you live in a hot location temperature-wise it'd probably be best to get an all in one water cooler for the cpu-it comes with the rad, tubing, pump, and water block...mount the rad, mount the water block and turn it on-easy. But yeah, the 4670K would be the nicer one to have. Microcenter is usually a day or two later than newegg with new cpus in stock so even if they don't have it the minute newegg does, they'll have them in stock so close to that you won't notice...and still be quicker than waiting on the delivery from newegg.

I will have to get that for my Laptop.

Of course! :)
Still need to order the SSD, CPU, and RAM

Almost thinking I may have room in my budget for 16GB RAM. Worth it or no?
Probably gonna drive to mirocenter later today once the traffic dies down and see if I can get my CPU
Ordered Windows 8 today because Newegg had a promo, only $85, probably as low as it's gonna go.
So far all I've received is the mobo. She's a beauty. I think the case should come later today.
