How To Suck As A Squad Leader

Here's one of my pet peeves: SL's that don't lead.

And on occasion, I'm guilty myself, as I won't notice either (a), I've been handed the position @ the start of the round, or (b) I get it assigned after the round has started and miss the notice.

To circumvent (a) I always check to see if I can give an order as the round starts. To avoid (b) I guess you just have to pay attention.

Does anyone know how the SL is chosen? Is there something real time in-game that indicates you are the squad leader?

SL is random besides when you make a new one obviously. I normally just leave/rejoin a squad so I don't have it. I'm good with using it, I just spam my spot key like crazy and it makes it seem like I'm on cocaine, constantly changing objectives.
