What do you guys recommend getting for a Blu-ray player -- the XBOX 360, Playstation 3, or something else?

Has anyone used the Netflix streaming service as a XBOX Gold member? If so, is it worth it?

Any other recommendations on the journey to HD/Blu-ray?

I know I have seen the set up in best buy for the blu-ray and wish I had one. If your really interested then I can ask my brother in-law. He used to be a manager at Rex Appliance Center before they closed. I can get some info for you.

The Netflix, I don't have the xbox but I do have the Roku Box that streams the videos. I am really impressed by the quality. I have a older projection screen. I even have mine running wireless. The only bad thing is that Netflix doesn't have any new releases. Most movies have been out maybe 1-2 years. They do have a boat load of older movies. Netflix does have some up to date tv series though. I watch Heroes and I don't have any type of premium channels just a antenna on my roof. I can just watch the new episodes off my Roku box. They might get more. I have the lowest cost of about 10 bucks a month and able to watch unlimited movies each month. My brother has the X-Box and has watched movies from it off Netflix and he's pretty impressed too.

Maybe my best bet would be to get a HTPC (Home Theater PC) and use Hulu watching TV shows/movies...

How much would a good Blu-Ray player run? Can they be installed in an HTPC?

I was going to build a HTPC and read some really good stuff; if I did I would go with a 780G board

That's good idea Soulzz. I was thinking of something like that too, when I get some money my way. If you build one please send some feed back on it

I'm doing some research. Looks like you can put in a Blu-ray player into it. From what I'm reading though, the Monitor and the Video card have to be HDCP compliant.

Newegg ftw :D.

i use netflix on my xbox and love but they do not offer blue ray for the xbox

Newer monitor and Video cards(up to 2 years old) should be HDCP compliant.

With software like AnyDVD HD (there are probably freeware alternatives too I just haven't looked), you should be able to fuck HDCP compliancy, and instead buy the hardware YOU like.

With CoreAVC, you should also be able to also playback 1080p videos just fine with any dual-core processor over 2ghz (single-core over 3ghz should also be fine imo), in pure software rendering - no expensive vid cards needed. The latest verson also features nvidia GPU acceleration (not sure how much it improves things but there's an option and it "turns on.")

Get CoreAVC for free at finalbuilds.edskes.net (it's clean, I've been using that site for years).

Blu-Ray drives are in their infancy, but you can get one for about $80 or something on newegg I think... or a writer for $180. I think I'm going to make the plunge when the writers go down to about $60-70... which is probably in a year or two if we're lucky.

Thanks HeatSurge, I think I'm going to go get that program you mentioned. Looks like this HTPC is going to cost me 550.

FYI, They do make a blu-ray player that also streams netflix movies through it.

IMO buying just a BluRay player is a total waste of money. ~$50 more you could get a PS3 or about $150 more a HTPC.
