Well, the subject title says it all. I finally got this #$$% stable and up to speed. G.Skill 12800CL9D-2GBNQ The XMP profiles worked, but were not stable so I did all the bios setting manually and finally got my memory up to speed. It's nice to have this running and it is a noticeable difference even over DDR3 1333. Anyway, the final settings.

MSI X48C mobo bios 7.3
core 2 Duo e8400 9x400 cpu/FSB
Vcore at 1.26,
NB at 1.38v
FSB terminal voltage 1.20
SB at 1.5.
DIMMV at 1.63
1:2 ratio for memory 064

How long did the whole process take?

Initially getting it running was maybe a minute in the bios. Discovering the XMP profiles weren't stable at 1600, and then finally coming to the solution I did along with testing (memtest, Intel Burn Test, 3dmarks) -about 4 hours.
