HARDOCP - Conclusion - Battlefield 4 Windows 7 vs. 8.1 Performance Review

Gameplay Experience Advantages
Are there gameplay experience advantages under Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7 in BF4? The answer is a, "Big YES."

Under Windows 7, we experienced choppiness as we played. This was felt both in the "Test Range" map, and in multiplayer gaming sessions. The choppiness was more pronounced on the GeForce GTX 780. We could get on a straight path, in the "Test Range" and move down a straight road. As we did this, there would be a pause, or chop, in the frames randomly. It was like the game was hitching for no reason. This happened more on the GTX 780. This is under Windows 7.

When we tried this on Windows 8.1 the pausing, or hitching, or chop (however you want to describe it) was completely gone. Moving was smoother with no hitching in the game on the GTX 780. This affected both the test range and the multiplayer gaming session.

Therefore, the gameplay experience advantage under Windows 8.1 is a smoother gameplay experience in BF4 on both video cards.

Nice. I have not done any back and forth between the two as I switched to 8.1 before BF4 came out. I still have some trouble with the game but when people dare ask I the rambling idiot, is it really better? My only real answer is I dunno.

I just upgraded to 8.1 earlier last night. Seems to be working great.

I'll "upgrade" to windows 8.1 when Ballmer films shaving his dick and posts the video on pornhub.

Say what you want about 8.1, gaming is a much better experience with this than anything else.

I agree. I've noticed quit a difference in gaming overall since going to 8 from 7. 7 is still great from a platform stability standpoint, but for a gamer I don't see any benefit to staying on 7.

Can confirm - 8.1 > 7 for BF4 -

no issues / crashes on 8.1

For BF4, maybe. But fuck BF4. :-)

Says the guy who just bought an AMD card and will be playing all the other AMD titles that work better on Windows 8. You know super computer titles like Plants versus Zombies frostbite edition that are the next can it run crysis type titles!

No seriously I had no intention of upgrading windows ever again and buying a mac in 2022. Cotton was a windows 8 hater as well. But windows 8.1... no big deal. Use it exactly like you used 7 and ignore the rest.

First thing I'll play on the new card: Crysis 1 at 60 fps. FINALLY. Then maybe replay RAGE with the new DLC. And then we'll see.

With intermittent NS2 of course.

I just hope win 9 won't be as big of a shit as 8 was... or that something (mantle/steambox a.k.a. linux) will totally change the game.

I dunno about windows 9 but i hear windows 10 won't have monitor support. It will be installed directly into your head with a knife. Theyre nice enough to not take your money until after installation.

Kinda like this?

In reading this thread I went ahead and upgraded to from 8 to 8.1. Now I can't stay connected to any server for more than 30 seconds? Wasn't there another thread about issues with 8.1?

Completely unrelated. Cplmac has been having that issue all morning on windows 7.

I had slowness on win 7 with a gtx780. Upgraded to 8 and fixed the slowness issues. I also upgraded to 8.1 when it came out and no problems at all with gameplay. After about 14-15 rounds of continuous playing, the game will crash after a round is over. Did a little research on this and it seems to be a memory leak on the client.

boooooo!!! fuck the client! man it seems eversince dice/EA went to tthis btteelog shit, nothing but nonsensical(<--an actual word?? wowsers) problems that never were experienced on previous titles!

Actually there's a couple of recent threads on BF4 forums that had relevant 8 to 8.1 issues and fixes. I kept applying fixes and testing in the unranked server till directX seemed to work, have not tried to get in a real game yet though.

Right but I bet if you were on 8 still you would have had the exact same issue with nothing to blame it on. I am merely saying the issue happening on 8.1 was pure coincidence to the upgrade.

Cplmac was getting kicked damn near every 30 seconds with various messages this morning. On all servers. He did manage to play a single full round before it flared up again. Likely ongoing Blaze issues which would make this 3 days in a row by my watch.

Could be but it was odd to say the least. I played a game this AM without issue and updated to 8.1 and couldn't do shit which raised my suspicion. I wasn't getting any errors or messages either which was also strange.

Hmmm well I could be wrong I am the rambling idiot after all. But this was about 6am ish eastern i think. It was just before I put up the new header. By no errors you mean nothing on battlelog either right not just no popup errors?
