12,500 CPU Cores Were Required to Render Cars 2

Wow, that is a long time for a single frame.

When your ray tracing an environment as big as a city shadows and all not so abnormal. Even at the resolutions their working with it is abnormal compared to say a render of a room in a house. I am surprised at the core count at that render time. Probably some inefficiencies between systems but the reason for cpu and not gpu rendering is it allows them to write their own software easier. Still could have been done on gpus but certain constraints and coding might have made it take longer.

One would hope since it would take way too long to render the movie otherwise but i assumed the farm was distibuting partial frame areas to render. I havent had a good look at the article since im on my phone. But yeah if its not per core what would that time add up to?
