Saw this on engadget as i assume bob did as well. People who own the crap to do this probably already understand how the foil would react to the electricity. I am not even sure what is happening other than it heats up to the melting point. My guess is it flys away as the disc is spinning.

Probably wouldn't work exactly the same on a DVD as instead of only being protected by lacquer there is another layer of plastic. But it would still mess it up none the less.
 
thats some serious voltage considering for every centimeter that it arcs through the air is 10Kv that things putting out 10-12 inch bolts pretty easy.
