Hi everyone.

Just wondering what your thoughts are for a good 1440P - 144 to 165 gaming monitor, around 27" size. I did a search on the TBG forums and the last thread was from July 2019 so I thought you all might have some up to date recommendations. I've read quite a few reviews and watched a lot of YouTube videos, but I trust your opinions more than someone who does a video on youtube after using it for a day.

Anyone have direct experience with the ASUS VG27AQ or the LG 27GL850-B or perhaps some alternative ideas?

Thanks for any insight if you have the time to chime in.

I have a LG UltraGear 27GL850-B (Vega64 GPU) and I am very happy with it. I would recommend another stand/arm, since the included stand is a bit flimsy. If you buy local and have the opportunity to look at different models, check the bleeding. I got lucky with mine but some seem to be worse.

This is the one I have and it works fine.

I had a similar question in April and several people gave me some great advice. I ended up getting 1440p 27" MSI at 165Hz. I love it! It isn't available from Newegg right now but haven't tried other sources. Got mine for about 400 USD.

The reason I recommend this over a 27" is primarily the price. It has all the same functions and features of a 27" monitor but in a larger curved landscape. You have height and tilt adjustments, 165hz at 2k with a crosshair option if you want to give it a try. The curved panels are great for gaming and while you might think a 32" is too large, I can't imagine going back to a 27" one after having a curved monitor this size.

The only time this monitor size might be a hindrance is if you're doing primarily office work because it does not have picture in picture and when a spreadsheet is that wide it's cumbersome to look at and find things quickly if you have a lots of data. The pip is fantastic to have a spreadsheet, email, zoom conference, and word documents open all at once at decent sizes on a monitor this size or larger. But since you're looking for a gaming monitor, I'm guessing that's not the case.

Edit: this monitor has been on sale for as low as $319 already this year so watch for the price to go lower as we get closer to Christmas.

agree with @sixer9682 ....will never go back to anything smaller then a 32inch....i have a 1440p 32inch monitor and I LOVE IT.....most 32 inchers are not crazy big VS their 27 inch counterpart....

this shows size change

Agreed.

I will say though, that you are not limited in fps if you have an nvidia gpu and a freesync monitor or vice versa (like this guy says in his Samsung monitor review), the monitor will still run at its max refresh rate as long as your gpu can push it.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I guess I should clarify that it's a gaming and general purpose monitor. I'm finally coming around to the benefits of the the higher refresh rate after hearing you guys rave about never going back to 60 hz. As far as a curved 32" model goes, I have a strange attic space for my office/studio that has a slanted ceiling right over where my monitor sits, so a 32 would be too high unless it sat a foot away from me. :) My space is the top floor of an old house, so the roofline is the same as my ceiling, it's a finished attic. I love the character of the space, but it limits your ability to display artwork and accommodate big monitors or tv's.

That being said, nice looking monitor for sure, maybe someday down the road. I do appreciate the help and recommendations very much! Thank you for taking the time to reply.

@JoeLeb ...easy fix.....wall mount arm.....i already know you are fighting the way the monitor stand will sit, when dealing with the desk and the wall angles.....so change the fact it sits....a wall mount can let you bring the monitor UP and change the tilt angle even on a angled wall....

@smokerob79 He's saying the monitor would be too tall to fit in the space between the ceiling and the desk, sitting or not. A ceiling mount won't change that fact and would actually probably be worse as it would bring the monitor even closer to him.

@Howitzer ...i am saying the mount can work off the angle of the wall....if he has the space for a 27 with the stand he has the space for a 32 inch not using the stand.....losing the stand off a 32 inch will give him a extra inch or 2 UNDER the height needed for the 27 inch with the stand on it.....the other option he can do, is put a small wood strip screwed in to the desk where he wants the monitor to stop and just lean it on the wall depending on how the angles come together....

proof of what i am saying is in the video i posted....the stands on those monitors are the same height.....so taking the stand off the 32 inch could make the monitor FARTHER away from his face then a 27 inch with the stand on it

@smokerob79 The monitors in your video are very tall. The stand on my Acer can be lowered all the way to the desk. If he gets a monitor that can do the same, he can lower it all the way down and maybe only have to bring the monitor forward a couple inches. However, then he'd be getting into territory where the monitor is actually too low for comfort.

G-SYNC doesnt work with that monitor so if he is pro nvidia he cant use V-SYNC. Or push his OS/Gameplay past 60 Hz

@JoeLeb I'm using the ASUS VG279QM. Upgraded from ASUS VG278. Happy with it for the most part. 280 MHZ is smooth as silk but it's being powered by a 3090 RTX. Playing BF3 and BFV for the most part and a few other games. If running at native resolution, (1920 x 1080) it's tough to see players in the distance and see the mini map. At least for these old eyes :)

I run at lower resolutions for BF3 and with adaptive sync on, ELMB off and in Racing Mode ( too washed out with it on). I can consistently get around 260-270 FPS in BF3 and much less in BFV (around 200) but I haven't tweaked the settings in BFV that much yet. Still haven't figured out how to keep the darn FPS Monitor or cross hairs on the screen. Constantly have to toggle those if I want them.

I was going to go with curved screen but already have a 3 monitor setup so didn't see the need for that.

Cheers

PeeKee
