So I told my wife, I'm buying a new electric guitar in the next months or so... I haven't owned one in about 15 years. This will be the first thing I learn... so help me.. :)

What guitar do you have your eye on? It's still a great time of the year to get one too.

Well previously I had a Charvel model 3, with a 5 pedal effects thing, and like Peavey 50. The guitar whole package was $2500. Since I'm a drummer though, and guitar is just for extra fun, I never played it enough and ended up hocking all of it to a pawn shop for like $300! Can you believe that shit? Now my life is different, but I still don't want to pay full price, so i'm going to have a real guitar player buddy help me find something used but good. He bought a Jackson from guitar center used for $500. If I could get away with a good guitar with locking nut, humbucking pickups, good tremolo, amp, and effects pedal for $1000 I would be happy.

Fellow drummer who dabbles in guitar playing. I bought a Helix Stomp which is a great pedal for tons of stuff. Can work as a multi effect pedal for your guitar, and can also work as a full rig with pedal and amp sim for guitar and bass. Can also work as an audio interface if you are trying to record stuff.

For amps, I love the Hughes and Kettner stuff. The Tubemeister series is awesome because you get the tube sound with an emulated cab DI out. Not as necessary if you are running a helix, but then again the TM20 is only a little more than the HX Stomp so it kind of depends what you want to do. Besides that, the Orange Micro Terrors are fantastic. Especially if you want a lot of gain. And since they are so cheap, you can put more money in to the guitar itself.

Edit: One other thought. The awesome thing about the HK amps is that they have a built in power soak with the DI. So you can crank the gain for more distortion without having to the run the amp at the full wattage. This way you get the crunchy distorted tones without having to piss off your neighbors. Obviously still super loud. But bearable. And the tone is great. If you are so inclined. Heres a sloppy jam my buddy and I recorded awhile ago at about 11PM in a Philly rowhome with no complaints. (at least not to my face).

Have you looked at Sweetwater.com great prices and 0% financing for 2-4 years if you need it. Great company I have bought a bit from them

Does anyone have any suggestions on the guitar? I want something quality but not incredibly expensive.

All depends on what you like to play, mostly. I would just caution you to get something that sounds good on more than one style of music.

Edit: If you really like heavy metal, you might want to check out the Schecter Omen-8.

I've owned several Ibanez and Jackson basses. Build quality is good, sounds good, and they are affordable. Probably can't go wrong with their guitars either.

I only recently got into effects. Just picked up a compressor and octave from MXR, and fuzz pedal from Darkglass. With a guitar you'll have different needs, most likely distortion or overdrive. Trying them out in person before you buy is usually best, but you can also get a good idea from watching YouTube comparison videos.

Try investing 14 minutes of your time in watching this video. It may help you figure out your playing style and hear the different sounds of various guitars from a guy who makes it look so easy. It's a good watch and covers a lot of different guitars and sounds you can get out of them. A far as quality of guitars go, I can't help but quote that wise old saying...."Buy it nice, or buy it twice." You'll never regret buying quality, and it will hold it's value better when you want to sell it down the road. Good luck on your journey.

I don't think I have a playing style hehe. I can do some power chords and minor fingering, but I haven't really played around on a guitar in about 20 years. I just want to.. :) Having said that I want it for hard rock.

Ibanez has good guitars, never tried a Jackson, but my brother had one he liked a lot.

I really like that Ibanez, but it looks like the Jackson is on sale... Can't go wrong either way, but hopefully someone with more guitar experience can weigh in for you.

I am of the belief that its pretty hard to get a bad guitar these days. If you can, go to a place and try them out. If you are willing to spend 1000 bucks there is definitely something nice there for you. And probably for well less than that. Theres some pretty great instruments out there for $600-1000.

I was looking at this earlier today thinking if I didnt just buy a guitar... https://www.sweetwater.com/store/de...e-custom-24-35th-anniversary-black-gold-burst

Alternatively, it might not be your style, but for about half that, my buddy has a player tele in HSS config that is super fun to play. Its got 3 different types of pickups with a phase switch so theres a sound for whatever you might play.

But it all just comes down to what you like man. Try em out and get what you like.

Edit: I would also be lookin at this: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/de...e-les-paul-tribute-plus-faded-cherry-sunburst

but im a sucker for an LP

That's funny that you both say that, because I don't like the look of both of those guitars. I guess just personal preference on the look.
