PCI-E slot died with New AMD RX 480 Video Card

That would suck if true; how the fuck do they move to a more efficient platform and raise the power usage beyond PCI-E spec?
 
It's a wait and see, for me.

Or it could always be AMD Haters. (I want this to take off so there stock will raise, so I can sell it)
 
well im glad it was on back order then so i didnt purchase already. thinkin ill be safe to just go with a r9 290 or something then

I am not an electrical engineer. But I have a feeling they messed up on the design of the power circuit. Realistically on a card that requires a dedicated power plug. You shouldn't be powering anything beyond what it takes to generate an error during boot

Best idea is to wait and see how the RX480 shakes out with the board partners and how the GTX 1060 is. Personally, I won't be buying a 1060 as it has a useless 3GB option and a 6GB version. Maybe only 2.5GB/5.5GB of it will be usable though =D
 
thats why i was looking at the 8gig rx480. ill hold out for another week or so read some more reviews

I'm going to wait a week or so, when Amazon has them in stock. Then just buy 1 rx480. I don't like new eggs return policy.

Following up on this week's Radeon RX 480 launch, there has been some questions raised about the power consumption of the card. This is after some sites whom directly tap the power rails feeding the card discovered that at least some of their samples were pulling more than the standard-allowed 75W over the PCIe slot and/or 6-pin PCIe external power connector.

To that end, it would appear that AMD's staff is working weekend duty, and they have just sent over the following statement.

As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8Gbps for GDDR5. Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal. Fortunately, we can adjust the GPU's tuning via software in order to resolve this issue. We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016).

If some of the data is to be believed, these cards are exceeding 150W total at times, which would mean there is either something causing them to run in the wrong power state, or they are just outright exeeding their power limit and need to be throttled back. As we don't do per-rail testing I don't have anything meaningful to add at this second, but it will be very interesting to see how AMD responds next week.

I'm not a fanboy of computer hardware or any PC company but I was really hoping AMD would step up and bring more competition. I'm not saying definitely but it looks like this 1060 is going to really hurt RX 480

The only possible minor complaint is it doesn't support SLI (probably not that big of a deal though)
