RAM problem, any help?

I installed some GSkill 2133 sniper 8gb-2x4 memory.

I have the asus Rampage III MB, and yes it's an I7-920 cpu but I was hoping to use this memory with the MB. The board is rated for 2133 and I'm trying to use it at 2005 with my OC-which has been stable for 2 years and since I've installed the 2133 RAM I continually get BSOD 124 error code-which isn't very helpful.

I've made sure the RAM is seated well, the timings set to 11-11-11-30 2t. The RAM are in the proper slots according to the MB manual. I get BSOD at 1.60v , 1.65v but if I leave the bios option for mem voltage on auto it goes to 2.0V but stays stable and no BSOD. What gives?

Is it just that my MB can't use this memory at the rated speeds and voltage? I've run memtest and had no errors until I got the BSOD at 54%. Any ideas?
 
124 is a common bsod when overclocking believed to be memory.

I assume your bclk overclocking since its a 920. Any luck with lower speeds putting it near 1866 or whatever the next standard speed down is.

Read alot of reviews where people cant get this high clocking ram to do what its rated for Remember to try it one stick at a time see jf one stick is bad.
 
Nah, next step down with my bclk is 1600 so I didn't bother. Yeah, I guess I'll have to tweak some more but I'll let you know what I find out after fooling around with it for a while.
 
Alright now that I am home I can type out everything I know :p

Despite the Memory controller being on the cpu now people still say the motherboard will dislike some ram. Its much more likely to have issues with ram liking Intel only or AMD only. Whatever the case ASUS in particular will tell you to check the Qualified Vendor list for your board. Which you will find in the same area as your driver downloads and what not. But I do not think this is the case, the board is posting and the OS is booting, in general the motherboard and the ram sound like their okay.

I skipped that generation and went from Core2 straight to Sandy so sadly you and balls know more about this generation than I do. I have seen bsod code lists for your gen that usually spell out what to adjust. But 124 is pretty non descript and every thing I have ever read points to memory. Funny enough bad Sandy Bridge overclocks will get 124's even when the BCLK is untouched and the ram is fine. They always tell us to check the ram first. You shouldn't need to adjust anything cpu side since you have good values. Sandy bridge is funky with the 124's usually lowering the internal PLL voltage actually stops them, weird as anything.

Do you want this ram for the ram speed or what. I was going to ask you, your board should let you change the ram divider ratio. You will be able to run the same BCLK and achieve the same cpu clock and run the memory at a lower clock. If the memory is fine but will not run its published figures this is always an option.
 
Mandatory hurrdurr question: Is the mobo running the latest bios? You might want to try the latest beta bios too if you're feeling adventurous. (I know Gigabyte often publish beta bioses, not sure if Ass-us does too)
 
Just updated the bios to the latest version, but that was my thought too, Heat. I want the RAM for the extra memory, 8gb vs 6gb, but more importantly for the speed. If I can't run it at 2000, though the RAM is 2133, with my OC then it's of no use to me. Asus has not updated their compatible memory sheet for this mb in forever it seems.

Sounds about right. They only put stuff on that list that they have tested with the board and they probably haven't touched it much recently. The only thing that pisses me off is wondering if 16 and 32 GB versions of particular kits will work. They always test 4 and 8 and what not.

If it was new get it exchanged see if another set will work. One thing for sure is to run a stock everything except overclock the ram see how that goes just to get a baseline. Personally id go with this, the 2133 rated version of what I run and 1.5 volt to boot - Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A2133C11R Intel sticks for sure AMD I wouldn't try them with. If I get you, 2 volts is working? I would not want to run it at that. All else fails sounds like at least one chip on one stick (or more) is not wanting to do that clock at a safe voltage. Voltage cures all until it kills :p
 
Well, so far after the bios update it's working well....but it did BSOD on 3dmark 11 with error code 124 again which my system has never done before. Good news at least with with bios update the auto voltage for RAM at 2005 is 1.65. I'm guessing I'll end up returning this and getting the Corsair you have listed above. I'm running Corsair now and have never had any bad experiences with them. Then again, never had any bad experiences with GSkill either until now so who knows.
 
Yeah, it's definitely going back. BSOD with BF3 so it's no good for me. I'll update this when I have the new RAM in the system.
 
Nothing but problems with gskill & OCZ; Asus boards have always been friendly with Corsair
