Wow... just for kicks I decided to configure my tentative "dream PC" on NewEgg as of today... and it's damn expensive! Wow...

Close to 3k! It has the components I really want though and a 40'' inch 1080p TV is included in the price (to serve as a monitor).

Ideally, I'd like an amp and some moderately high quality floorstanding speakers (~$300 each-ish) - Probably Paradigms - for sound too... so if I wanted to build this from scratch I would need about $3500. I'd better find a job :-/ .

I'm sure if I scaled it down to more midrange components (no uber low-latency DDR3 memory, AMD-based system + no uber motherboard, no SSD, a bit smaller monitor) it would immediately drop to $2000ish though...

I was thinking of the big mobo+mem+proc upgrade this summer, but I think I'll wait for the SATAIII south bridges... I'm sure the crazy development of SSDs will basically make SATAII obsolete by the end of next year... which is big :fisting for anyone who spends major $$ on a state-of-the-art mobo today.

I'm actually really happy I went state-of-the art two years ago when I built my PC. Even with the core i7 I'm still just a bit reluctant to upgrade. My opty 170 OCd to 2.7ghz, DFI Expert mobo, and Mushkin redline 2gb kit 1:1 with the fsb have all done extremely well so far (knock on wood).

It's kind of saddening to see your motherboard moved to "legacy products" though at nvidia lmao. It just happened last month. Nforce 4 is officially "dead." It's kinda nice that the drivers for nforce 5 work just fine on my mobo though lol... (because of their "unified" driver architecture I guess) so I'll be using those for upgrades until a problem appears.

I actually didn't check to see if the power supply was compatible or certified for i7 blah blah blah
I just figured 24pin main connector is enough right?

Haven't looked at what "core i7 certified" means... it might be marketing BS. I don't think the i7's introduced any specific requirements beyond the ordinary...

I was thinking of moving to a raid-0 for the two vertexes (vertices lol) and a raid-0 for the two samsung F1's. Operating system + games on the vertexes; swap and other storage on the f1's... so I think I'll still have hard drives.

Also, I really want to move to a full tower case with my next upgrade. I'm just done with crappy / mid tower cases. My current one was like $50 or something, but I bought $60 worth or so of fans/filters/meshes/controllers for it so it kinda ended up being like buying a nice case to begin with...

I'm just looking for now though, like I said I think I'm gonna buy when sata 3.0 comes out. There will probably be a newer i7 then too, lower nm tech likely.

Of course its not 1337!
Its still badass - and only 1,500 bucks.
I also have 4GB RAM I can put in there - so I'll have 10GB of RAM when I'm done... which is pretty 1337.
I believe you're right about the i7 certified marketing.
I do have the SSD for the OS and GAMES 60GB should be sufficient right? I did see a 160GB 10,000 RPM Seagate drive for like $50 buck refurbished! I do have a 1TB eSATA drive that could store all music, photos, etc.

This setup also took into consideration what I already have...

Seagate made a 10k RPM drive!?? Sounds like a Western Digital Raptor to me... unless it's a SCSI drive or smth... wtf.

Actually my games folder right now is ~94gb but I have a lot of games I don't really play installed...

I'd really be more comfortable with 120GB but it becomes way too expensive with SSDs.

Umm btw if you have 4gb ram currently, it's probably DDR2, and only two sticks... the i7's take DDR3 3 sticks usually... and also I'm not sure if you can mix/match different memory modules and what success you can hope for with yours if you can.

6gb should be more than enough. Heck, even with 2gb currently I'm just fine...

12gb is an overkill imo, unless you do video or large image editing or some other serious production work...

those are the oldskool raptors tho... and refurbished.

Personally, I'd take a 1GB samsung F1 at ~$85 instead... the SSD should give you plenty of sexual pleasure anyway. And also, the raptor only shines with non-sequential reads, because of the lower seek times, so it's not that dramatic of a difference imo.
