Thread: System Down!

  1. System Down!

Well, my wife managed to dump furniture oil on my system this morning-don't ask me how. I guess she thought she was being nice and was putting the oil/polish on my desk (which I never do since it fucks up the mouse tracking) and managed to tip it over and spill almost the whole bottle onto my system through the top of my HAF 932 case.

Lord only knows what I'll find when I get home but I don't think it'll be running. I might have to replace some parts depending on what I find.

And this is why I have said repeatedly to stay out of that room. It's my man cave, don't fuck with it. It's clean, it's vacuumed, it's even organized (which is unusual for me).

Anyway, I'll probably be MIA in games for at least a few days until I see what's fucked up and what needs to be replaced. Later!

Oh hell, you talking like that orange oil furniture polish, was the PC on when this happen? I bet the wife is freaking out right about now as much if not more than you are. I wish you the best of luck getting your rig fixed but I have a feeling you are going to be replacing some of your major components because it's going to be next to, if not impossible to clean that crap off your hardware.

LOL Right on the money on all counts. It was the orange oil furniture polish and she called up crying so much I thought somebody died. I had about a half second flash of rage and the next second did a mental shoulder shrug. Like you say it's either dead and needs to be replaced, which is what I think, or some parts will miraculously be spared (though I doubt it).

Hard drives should be fine. CPU too. I don't know about RAM--maybe, maybe not. I doubt the board and graphics card survived. As a hardware junkie, I'd say it's an opportunity to upgrade. Hopefully you're not already running the latest.

Asus Rampage III motherboard and EVGA Nnvidia GTX 580 GPU, Asus Xonar Essence STX PCIE sound card, and Corsair DDR3 1600 7-7-7-20 RAM. So, no chance for upgrade which sucks ass. That just means a lot of really good hardware got flushed down the toilet.

I hope the HDs are fine, I've got two 120GB SSD and one SATA HD in there too.

  6. I would clean it all up, but I do have experience with dissembling electronics and washing them. Yes I said wash them, but not in the sense of washing with soap and water.lol. As long as the parts were not on when the liquid entered you should be able to clean everything up. It will not be easy or fast, but can be done.

This is an insurable event - if you own your house this could be a good accident

I wish you the best of luck partner none of that stuff is cheap just off the top of my head your looking at about 2k worth of hardware there. Hell I have 2-OCZ Vertex 2 Solid State Drive and those alone ran me about $225. each

Ouch. If your Xonar STX was beneath your graphics card, maybe it was shielded. Hopefully the RAM survived. That really sucks about the Asus RIII & GTX580 especially. That's an easy $1000. Maybe it's covered by insurance--but I somehow doubt that. General homeowners doesn't often include accidental damage. If it was older equipment, I'd say you can just disassemble it and give it a bath in high-purity alcohol. However, that'll remove all TIM & stickers and hopefully that furniture oil too.

Yeah, thank goodness Microcenter is near. And I'm not worried about replacing it since the Mrs. makes 3x what I do and she'll buy whatever I need to replace, but it's a hell of a waste of a good system and good money for furniture oil. On the plus side, I doubt she'll ever set foot in there again. lol.

It wasn't powered on and yeah, I got out a bottle of alcohol and the q-tips after cleaning the case out some more. So far everything's running which amazes me. I really thought I'd lost some stuff here, but at least for now it seems to work.
