So my roomates who play BF3 and MW3 on console (lulz..) are bitching to me that hey keep getting their connections dropped from PSN and XBL. I honestly don't give a flying fuck, but they asked me for help and I told them Id DMZ the router so they can play.



I have an Ubee router from Time Warner Cable. It serves as both the internet modem and the router, so I am not sure if I can fuck with it, or if I have to call them to fix it.

The only thing that I can think of right now is that you are going over your bandwidth cap and it's dropping whatever connection needs to get beneath your limit. NAT should take care of the rest, so it does not sound like a addressing issue, that is pretty much automated at this point anyways.

And I am not sure how putting your router in, "DMZ" mode, (neutral space in networking) would really do anything. That would just ensure that those within the local LAN can't fuck with the settings/router.

Junk their router/modem and ask for a modem only. Buy a decent router (I recommend D-Link or Linksys $20 - $50 ), run cat5 to all devices from new router and done. That should clear up a lot of their issues, but could also increase issues for your computer too depending on allowed throughput of your account. If you don't want to do the work yourself call them up and explain the problem they should have a viable solution.

There is no way I am going over my banwidth, we have TWC's extreme internet, the thing is that it is intermittent. Im not sure if I can ditch their modem/router combo bob, it's required for their service, so I've been told. Im not sure what to do lol.

Well you can always call them. I prefer to do my own routing in the house what they do outside of the house is their business. Since it is intermittent it is more than likely a problem on their end. Would it happen to be peak times that it happens?

Lex I have a comcast modem linked to my Linksys router. On the router page I can set bandwidth for devices (Six did this too but his wife had other technical issues non-router related). With that setup my wife can do all of her work and neither my gaming nor her work ever has a stutter.

At this point he has little to no control mike. I know Verizon's combo's you couldn't even get into and if you reset it so you could it would no longer connect to them and then the setup disk just locked you back out again. Not sure how his provider is on that but even if he could get into the configuration he is probably better off with another router like you, and me and everyone else who is still sane.

As bob suggested he should get just a modem from them if possible. That way there is no uneditable firewall, etc in the path that would still be there by adding another router.

I still use my original Linksys router from years ago (WRT54G v2.2) as the main one coming in. Just replaced my WRT54G v5 with a Gigabit/N router for my network in my room. Techinically that router is replacing my dead ASUS RT-N16 which was also Gigabit/300 N 2x2 mimo.
