If you want some more in-depth system information, download and install Sandra. Somewhere in it is a "hardware information" tab. It'll give you the chipset, driver versions, cpu/motherboard/ambient temps, etc. As far as your i7 860, you have 4 physical cores and 4 virtual cores (8 threads), for lack of a better word...see Hyper-threading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It's part of the Lynnfield family http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynnfield_(microprocessor). Here's a review on your chip: The Intel Core i7 860 Review - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

As far as your rig, unless it's an XPS (if memory serves), the bios is pretty locked down as far as overclocking options. Still, nice rig to frag on :)

Here's my best stable OC. I've got the EVGA X58-Tri SLI and 6GB Corsair RAM@ 7-7-7-20. It's too hot to run this in the summer at this speed, but it's great for the winter :)

    Suck it Renno!

I've been running at 4 GHz with my i7 920 since last July. I didn't even try to go higher, I shot for 4 and hit it first time and haven't touched it since. My settings are in the CPU-Z validation link in my signature.

Yeah, go ahead and try that in Atlanta or S. Florida. First, no AC and liquid cooling or not you'll burn up long before your cpu. Don't get me wrong, I can run it at that level in the summer on air cooling, but choose not to do so as that creates extra heat (tops out at 68C under full load on air).

Like Soldier though, I usually keep mine at 4.0 and really there is no need to go higher on a daily basis for what I do with my comp.

Um, anything over 2.5 is a bit freaky, thank you very much :P.

  12. #27
Anything over 2.5? That might be freaky for a field mouse but we're talking men here. I know, that automatically disqualifies Soulzz, but still let's at least try to be rational about this.

Me too, but without AC it's kind of unbearable to sit in the room in the summer... It's like having a small space heater running. I've got a GTX 480 in the loop too though, and it does SETI@Home when idle :-) .
