just installed a new mobo, get a error saying cpu is over heating, go into bios and at start it is 174F then it cools down to about 132F.. any one got a fix?

Well did you double check your job on the thermal paste? Are u sure the cooler is installed securely? I mean outside of those two cant do much for you lol.

Get a heatsink. j/k

Possible the heatsink is not tighten down enough. I had the same problem. All because I was afraid of over tightening it.

Overheat=no heatsink! Seriously the others already said it but make sure your cpu cooler is securely attached and that you used thermal paste if none was already applied to the cpu cooler you have.

ok that must be the problem, or maybe not enough thermal paste i put like only a little tiny bit less then a pea size. also i got my SLI WORKING!! :) was deffiantly the mother board, went out and got the sabertooth p67, ok ill see what i can do,..

If the mating surfaces are perfect then a pea size is fine for a certain size chip. If you ever go to build one of these 2011 rigs remember those processors are huge it will take more paste. But if the heat sink surface is uneven then you can have area's not even touching at all. I come from laptops where we actually use a razer to apply paste but desktops have enough weight and force to do proper and better spreading according to the surfaces.

I usually recommend doing the paste attaching the heat sink and then pulling it off to see whats what and then redoing it based on those results. The heatsink probably isnt new to you but if you have never checked it before you might not be familiar with the properties of its surface.

LOL what are you using the stock intel? Myne is still in the box but Ill be using it for a demonstration sooner or later here.

yea, lol thing is terrible.. well im all sorted out, every thing is running smoothly, sli works :) that makes me happy now i get to use the card thats been sitting around since September. still cant believe how hard you got to jam into place tho..

Always go with an aftermarket cooler, they have better seating and easier too in addition to better cooling. That old push pin shit works, but it sucks donkey balls. When you get a chance change it out for something better.

I've seen a few methods apply paste, but when in doubt email the manufacturer or YouTube a video. I have a brand new h100 cooler waiting for a processor to attach it to. It comes with thermal paste ready to go, but I'm weary of the quality of paste they used. Cause that's leads me to another possible issue you may have. What thermal paste did you use?

I always used a laminated card, such as an ID for spreading the thermal paste. Sixer and Rain are so right about aftermarket coolers, I have never used a stock one since I have been building my own systems.

some cheap shit, but it wasnt the paste, the heat sink wasnt pressed down all the way, spent a half hour to get that thing in place, didnt realize how hard you have to push down on it.
