VPN For Dummies

So I was given a warning by my ISP (twc) due to some stuff I streamed recently from popcorn time. So I started to look into VPN services. What do you guys use and why?
 
I use private internet security never had an issue.
 
im like 90% sure there empty threats, ive had so many of those, from streaming movies, downloading them. Nothing has ever happened lol

I personally use privatetunnel and I started using it mainly to bypass the tethering block on my phone. You have US and EU IPS. Problem is if you are using it to stream you are paying for bandwidth. But it's easy to use and rock solid.


As far as threats shit I've seen people cut off on the first pirate download they ever did and without warning. File downloaded and bam the connection was gone.

Those threats are legit, they can cancel your service, and there are many people who don't have a second choice for an ISP so tread carefully if your in that position. I also don't think a vpn does anything in this case, it all goes through your modem either way. People use VPN mostly to get around region locks and I guess for security reasons, which even Netflix figured out how to block. It all comes down to the owners of the copyrighted material putting pressure on the ISP to do something about it. Ive had friends get cease and desist orders from HBO directly for downloading pirated shows.

Actually half the point of VPN's is encryption. It doesn't have to be but why bother making employee's use a VPN to access sensitive work information if you aren't going to bother encrypting it?

Private tunnel is most definitely encrypted and these days I imagine most public services that cost money are. Your ISP can only see the encrypted packets. Unlike local traffic where they can see the server you are connected to (HTTPS doesn't allow them to see or block individual pages, just ask russia).

3 or 6 strikes whatever it was is dead in the water as of now but media groups are still pushing and they can still sue people directly if they want.
 
I stand corrected, forgot about the fact that some of those VPNs are encrypted, so it should work fine. This is why I don't work in IT and should just stick to the number crunching and playing video games. Don't worry though the media companies will probably force the ISP to not allow their customers to use any VPNs or any other magical work around.

The Republican FCC is definitely confusing on this matter lol. Typically they bend to the will of corporations and rights holders. But the ISPs need to be protected from the big bad media companies
 
I use Private Internet Access (PIA). I've been very pleased with it. You can have five devices going at at time, they have SOCKS5 proxy options, windows desktop app, and android/ios apps. I use the proxy with deluge for torrents, and I use the app on my phone when I am on public wifi. They have a no data collection policy and have an excellent track record.

I don't like the idea of any of the "lifetime" one time purchase providers. They have no motivation to improve their service. The subscription based ones do.
 
Yeah two years ago I was also warned by my ISP for using Popcorn time. It's basically a Torrent downloader anyways. I only use popcorn time when I go to trade shows, vacation, out of town and of course use the Hotel's ISP.

Not VPN related but if interested, I go here to see shows and "Featured" movies (AKA still in theatre):

When I can I mostly watch the movies that are just going to be released as they have the highest quality.
Just go for the ones tagged with a "HD" , those are basically DVD copies. Don't bother with the "CAM" versions.

For shows just pick the show's name and then one of its stream links.
 
In the corporate world, HideMyAss is generally used, but they will give your identity to law enforcement if pressured. The connection itself, however, is properly encrypted, so unless you tell everyone you're downloading crap, you're O.K.
