Time to get a new build.

My last build was from 2013 so I'm well behind lol.

What's the choice? Rx - 580 (8GB) or 1060 6GB

Performance they are pretty identical I think.

I know the norm is 16 gigs at least on a rig but with the new DDR4 2800MHZ would 8 GB perform fine?

I have 8 GB 1333 DDR3 so the DDR4 already a huge bump.


I'm upgrading my monitor finally since the release of bad company 2....yeah you can imagine how long it's been heeeeheee

Better toys to play with means even more super uber leetness :p
 
A big question would be are you getting a freesync monitor or g sync? if free sync then I would go AMD. If G sync then nvidia. It's a big difference between normal monitors and I would recommend going with one or the other. I've currently got 2 of these and I love them to death. It's a 1440p 165hz TN panel.

As for the RAM, 2800Mhz should be fine for gaming for the next few years. 8BG of ram is more than enough for just gaming. I mean 16GB would help future proof the rig but with the prices right now for RAM I'd go with 8. It's not going to limit you in terms of framerate. I would only go 16GB right now if you plan on streaming, video editing, or anything of that sort.

I'd do the 1060-similar performance to the 580 but uses way less power and just runs games better IMO. For the memory? IDK, BF1 uses 8 gb by itself. I know BF4 is like half that so you should be okay with 8 for now...it's expensive as fuck.

What kind of monitor are you getting, and are you upgrading the cpu?
 
yeah im getting the ryzen 1600 (6 cores - 12 threads), I have the FX 8350 AMD and it worked well for me for a few years no issues, so I will stick with AMD. Plus side, they now use less power

Monitor Im good with just one, I know some of you have like two, three monitor setups lol

Getting a BenQ 24 inch one 2-MS, good pricing so i'll pull the trigger on that.

Im keeping my 750 PSU and my full size tower, the fans still work. I'll manually add another 200 mm fan to it, room for one more on top. It already has 2 x 200mm intake, one at the front the other on the top with 140 mm exaust and side vents.
 
I would say bite the bullet and get 16gb of ram. Expensive yes, but well worth it. No headaches in the future.
 
Have you always had AMD? I have always used Intel, is AMD similar in performance?
 
In the last 10 years just AMD for my personal rig at home.

I never had an issue with performance with AMD. I dont do anything hardcore to stress test it though. I game, stream, surf, odd things here and there. That's it.

I have a core i5 for my work laptop and that one works fine too.

The new version is coming out in April, the 2600, or the 1600 should be cheaper then. Either way, it's a good cpu.
 
hmmm maybe I can wait and get the 2600. 3.4 base 3.8 turbo instead of 3.2 and 3.6. I guess slightly newer architecture, i am not sure if I will see a huge performance difference for what I do though

Might not make a huge difference, but it'll probably run a little cooler and have better memory compatibility. That's my only gripe with the Ryzen 1000 series is that it's very touchy about what memory it will run at which speeds.

I'm hoping the 2000 series has this solved.
 
who here purchases sound cards? Like a sound blaster card? Never invested in one.
 
I've used Asus Xonar cards for about 8 years now. Recently I switched to the Sound Blaster ZX mainly for cosmetics...the Xonar I had needed a 4 pin molex for power. The new ones use a PCIE cable but still need the external power. That's their high end one though.

I love to be able to hear everything, and even with Soundblaster on the MB it doesn't compare to the card. The sounds are fuller, louder, and clearer; well worth the money. The drivers have been very good too-so that hasn't been a worry with Win10.

Edit: I got my ZX on a xmass sale of $75 or $85 I don't recall which but it wasn't much.
 
Mastercard/visacard uses the ZX also...and Chuck had one for a while but I don't think he's using it now.

Edit: one last thing-I prefer the ZX because it's a little louder and cleaner than the Z -shotgun blasts jump out at you and explosions are ripe.
 
Interesting. Is it basically like a soundcard adapter if you will?
