Ok so i am pulling my hair out on this one. I recently (3 weeks ago) upgraded my modem from my ISP. About a week after doing so i stared to notice some high ping spikes. They are now occurring more frequently. Now my home network is set up weird. But every one of our devices is hardwired with the exception of our mobile phones and tablets etc. Now i have reset my modem many times on my end, and many time on my ISP's end. My old modem never had an issue like this at all.

The VERY confusing thing for me is that my download and upload are absolutely perfect. It never dips.
I've run speedtests while getting high ping and it comes back perfect. See pic below.

I thought that maybe there is a problem with either my Router or switch. I then directly connected my PC to the router. Same issue. I then connected my PC straight to my modem. After about 10 minutes it is doing the same issue. Which makes me think it is my brand new modem. It is a Docsis 3.1 Gateway Modem with Bridge Mode turned on so i can use my own Router.

I do have a Technician coming out on Tuesday to look at everything for me.

Anyone have any suggestions? Or have had similar issues? I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like your modem, since that is the only thing that changed in the setup.

I once had a horrible time with this 10 years ago or so. I called Comcast a dozen times had a tech come out 2 or 3 times and finally I got to a manager that sent out a street service tech. He looked at the main box in the apartment and the one out on the street where he found a defective thing, I cant remember what its called which is weird since I used to work in a warehouse full of them.

It's a lot like what you are saying one day it was fine and the next it was massive spikes and then it became total shutdown.

Have you run a tracert? You might have a bad hop somewhere.

I have. The high latency starts at hop 2. Which is the modem. Tech is coming by today to look at it

Techs just came. I'll see how this works out. If not I'll try to change the DNS. Thanks guys!

if your problem still occurs. 1 have you got higher networkspeed, that might give that problem, it did for me, so i downgraded from 100mb to 50 mb, now it runs .

Seriously...change your DNS servers .....and test.

The Google Public DNS IP addresses (IPv4) are as follows:

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

So i spoke too soon. Still getting a high ping after getting a brand new modem. SO i switched my routers DNS to googles. Hopefully this will help out.

Shouldn't be a factor unless your isp has serious issues.

I am really starting to lose my shit here. So i am still having high latency issues. I have changed to a brand new wireless router. Still the issue persists. I changed the DNS settings to that of Google's/ Still persists. And i also changed all the cabling on my network. I had Comcast give me a brand new modem And still the issue persists.

An interesting note though. My issues all started when i upgraded my modem (To a Wireless gateway) 3.5 weeks ago. Since then, every time i call and have them do a health check, they somehow cannot see the modem and i have to do a hard reset. 5 times now I've done this. I just got off the phone with advance technical support and the tech had no idea what could be going on (And he seemed pretty damn knowledgeable.)

The only possible thing i can think of is the damn Wireless Gateway modem. What do you guys think?

Your network security solid? Whenever I download porn and try to play my ping gets higher, is someone secretly on your net that shouldn't be?

Quite solid. I thought that someone may be leeching off of me. But everything i've checked shows me no one other than myself and my girlfriend are on the network.

*Edit*
My ping when i play and my girlfriend are on the network is typically 30-40ms. Never goes above that even when we stream.

Maybe a bad wire in your place somewhere? It only screws up your connection when it gets to hot. Have you tried other internet plugs in your house?

I had the same thing happen to me Irish. It was the coax cable running between my modem and the pole. It had a 9 inch split in the insulation. They replaced that and all smooth after that

I'll have to make mention of that tomorrow when the tech comes. The first time the techs came they didn't look at the lines. Funny thing is that they replaced or reconfigured all the coaxial cabling in my basement.

I thought of that too, thinking that maybe the cables are just worn over time. But i replaced it all and still the same result. Good thinking though.

When I first moved back to my mothers I was having MASSIVE latiency spikes... it drove me insane. Finally I had the tech come out and run a new line right from the pole to the house/box, and a new line from the box directly to my room for the modem. Fixed all the issues.... now if Time Warner could just give me better speeds or at least what I paid for

Also, why bridge at all? Why not just go Modem to router?
