The reason games crash is because the overclock isn't 100% stable. First off, you are going to blow up your ram at 2.6v that is just insane. 2.1 or 2.2 is the highest you should ever go with DDR2. At 2.6v you may have already damaged your ram.

Also, your vcore is way too low for that frequency. You should be pumping it up to 1.4 or even higher until you find your max frequency. Then you can back it down.

Also try testing with OCCT. It only takes an hour and seems to work better for me for testing stability.

I would also like to say that it is pretty rare to get a Q6600 to run at 4 gigahurtz stably. Most only do about 3.6 to 3.8. So if you never get it stable at 3.95, don't be sad.

Monitor your temperatures. Maybe when you game, your video card dumps a lot of extra heat into the case (prime stresses only the CPU, not the vid. card), so it pushes the CPU "over the edge" thermally. Try running prime + furmark. Also, you are testing prime with 8 threads right? You should be... or at least 4. (The q6600 is quadcore + HT right, so 8 threads? I can't even remember).

  4. thanks alot guys heatsurge was right on with the video card heating up it would raise my cpu temp to 83c ouch! i was allready running hot with prime i didnt even think about the added heat from the video card with just prime it was huvering around
77c-79c and sorry about the typo i said 2.6v for the mem but i ment 2.26v sorry
so i added another fan between vid card and cpu h/s and i think i am good to go
i hope the cpu dont burn up for at least 2 weeks at those temps gaming performence is deffently bestter at least 15fps avg. boost
and just incase u were wondering i got a ati 5870 vid card

thanks alot for the speedy replies

I've never had a CPU blow up / die on me, and I've overclocked very highly - even for years at a time.

Maybe if you have it for more than 3 years, but hell - who waits that long for an upgrade these days :-) .

And yeah, video cards are teh suck if you don't have good airflow. I've gone to liquid cooling now, but the types of air coolers that dump heat into the case can really fuck things up with hot video card revisions (GTX 470/480, ATI 5970, etc.).

Bottom line with OCing is - test, test, test... and monitor temperatures with all conditions. I monitor with Realtemp when I need to and the "logging" function for the temp is really useful (you can look at the log even if the PC crashed to see how the temps were right before it crashed).

Core i7@ 4.2Ghz FTW my dick is waaaaayyyyyy bigger since we were measuring LOL
stable now for almost a year
My advice. Dont EVER run prime overnight or any stress test for that matter. That is useless and most likely will damage the CPU.

Don't want to give out my secrets to every one. I worked hard with much trial and error to get my oc right. Don't want to just pass my work onto everyone. If you want to talk about it I'll tell you heatsurge mmmwwwwwaaaaaahhh ;) and 60fps on high settings for bc2 is easy to achieve.

I was asking Madman, but it looks like his issue is resolved. That Q66 was a beast when it came out.

I have the Q6600 in my back up computer. I may try and overclock it some day with the help of the clan. In this computer I have an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz. Installed memory (RAM) 6.00 GB..... 64-bit OS

    i7 920 overclocking thread - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

Overclock.net - Overclocking.net and XtremeSystems Inc are probably the best forums for squeezing all you can out of your rig. As far as stability testing, people ramble on about "Prime stable lulz 111eleventyone", but they overlook POVRAY, Cinebench, PCMarkVantage, hell, even SiSoft Sandra has some decent tools to determine if your rig is truly stable (and Linpack is the be-all, end-all of cpu tests). Anywho, play around, a 1 ghz overclock on an i7 is stupidly easy on halfway decent cooling :) The stock i7 heatsink is decent, but if you want clocks on air you're going to have to go aftermarket. Good luck!
